How this calculator works

Gas demand is estimated from BEIS Typical Domestic Consumption Values (TDCVs) by property type, with multipliers for bedroom count and insulation quality. Electricity demand uses similar TDCV bases plus an occupant factor. Costs use the Ofgem price cap for 2026: 7.2p per kWh for gas, 24.5p per kWh for electricity, 31p per day gas standing charge and 60p per day electricity standing charge. Heat-pump cost is electricity demand divided by a coefficient of performance (COP) of 3.0.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate are the bill estimates?

Estimates are typically within ±20% of actual bills for owner-occupied homes. The biggest unknowns are individual usage habits — thermostat setting, occupancy patterns, and how often you boil the kettle. We use BEIS Typical Domestic Consumption Values as the demand baseline.

Where do the gas and electricity rates come from?

Rates are taken from the Ofgem default tariff price cap effective for 2026: 7.2p per kWh gas, 24.5p per kWh electricity, with regional standing charges averaged. We update the figures every cap review (quarterly).

Why is my actual bill higher than the estimate?

Common reasons: a higher thermostat setting, leakier home than the "average" insulation rating suggests, electric showers or tumble dryers, or a fixed tariff above the cap. Compare your meter readings against the kWh figures we estimate to localise the gap.

Are standing charges included?

Yes. We add the daily standing charge × 365 to both gas and electricity costs. The total comes to around £330 a year combined — this is unavoidable even at zero consumption.

How does heat pump running cost compare to gas?

A heat pump uses about one-third of the kWh that a gas boiler would (COP of 3), but each kWh of electricity costs about 3.4× more than gas. Net effect: 0.33 × 3.4 ≈ 1.12 — so running cost is broadly comparable, before factoring in lower standing charges if you ditch the gas connection.
