Can too much insulation cause condensation?

The short answer — too much insulation rarely causes condensation, but the wrong type or installation does Insulation does not create moisture. Condensation forms when warm, moist air inside a home meets a cold surface, such as a single-glazed window or an uninsulated wall. Adding insulation raises the temperature of interior surfaces, which actually reduces […]

Do thermal curtains actually keep heat in?

Thermal curtains reduce heat loss, but they are not a substitute for insulation Many homeowners ask whether hanging thermal curtains can meaningfully reduce their heating bills. The short answer is that they can help, but the effect is modest. The primary mechanism is simple: a thermal curtain adds a layer of still air between the […]

Will cavity wall insulation cause damp?

The single most important thing to know cavity wall insulation does not inherently cause damp, but it can if installed incorrectly or in the wrong property Damp from cavity wall insulation is almost always a result of improper installation, unsuitable property type, or pre-existing structural defects — not the insulation material itself. The risk is […]

Does thick underlay count as floor insulation?

On a suspended timber floor, thick underlay alone can save roughly 10–15% of heat loss — but it is not a substitute for 100mm mineral wool between the joists If you are considering upgrading your floor covering, you may wonder whether a thicker underlay will meaningfully reduce your heating bills. The short answer is that […]

Does loft insulation make a house cooler in summer?

Loft insulation can reduce summer heat gain by up to 30% according to the Energy Saving Trust Many homeowners assume loft insulation is only useful for keeping heat in during winter. In fact, insulation works year-round by slowing the movement of heat in both directions. The Energy Saving Trust states that a properly insulated loft […]

Home Insulation Glossary

R-value
Thermal resistance. A measure of how well insulation resists heat flow. Higher R-values mean better insulation. Measured in m2K/W.
U-value
The rate of heat transfer through a building element. Lower is better. Uninsulated cavity walls have a U-value of about 1.5, insulated walls around 0.5.
Cavity wall
A wall built with two layers (leaves) with a gap between them. This gap can be filled with insulation to reduce heat loss by up to 35 percent.
EWI
External Wall Insulation. Insulation boards fixed to the outside of a building and covered with render. Suitable for solid-walled properties.
Thermal bridge
A point in the building fabric where heat transfers more easily, such as around window frames or at wall-floor junctions. Also called a cold bridge.
Vapour barrier
A membrane that prevents moisture from passing through insulated walls or roofs. Essential to prevent condensation and damp within the insulation layer.
