Octopus Energy signed up its 300,000th solar customer last month. That is one in every eight UK solar households now managed by a single supplier. The question for the other seven is whether they should join them.

The piece highlighted the company’s slick app and flexible tariffs. But for a homeowner in a 1970s semi in Manchester, the decision rests on harder numbers than brand loyalty.

What Octopus actually charges

Octopus does not manufacture its own panels. It partners with installers and offers a fixed-price quote online. A typical 4kW system with 10 panels and a 5.2kWh battery comes in around £7,500–£8,000, according to quotes collected by Axiom readers. That is within £200 of the national average from the Microgeneration Certification Scheme database.

The catch is the battery. Without it, the system drops to about £5,500. But Octopus pushes the battery hard because it unlocks the Intelligent Octopus tariff, which charges just 7.5p per kWh overnight. A typical household using 3,500 kWh a year can shift half their usage to cheap hours and save roughly £150 annually on top of solar self-consumption. The battery pays for itself in about seven years under current prices.

Who qualifies, and who doesn’t

Octopus only installs on roofs it deems suitable: south, east, or west facing, with at least 20m² of clear space and no heavy shading. North-facing roofs are refused outright. That rules out roughly 15% of UK homes, based on Energy Saving Trust data.

But… the EPC impact is real. This home starts at band D (55). Adding solar and a battery lifts it to band C (69), potentially raising the property value by 2–3% according to Nationwide’s 2023 analysis. That means a £7,800 system could add £6,000–£9,000 to the sale price of a £300,000 house. If you sell within 10 years, the payback is effectively negative, you profit.

The maths changes if you have an electric vehicle. Octopus’s Intelligent Octopus Go tariff offers 7.5p/kWh for six hours overnight. Charging a car adds 2,000 kWh a year, but at that rate the cost is just £150. Without solar, the same charging on a standard variable tariff would cost £570. The solar + battery + EV combination is where Octopus really shines.

Yet there is a risk. Octopus’s fixed-price quote locks in the cost, but the savings depend on future electricity prices. If wholesale prices fall and Ofgem cuts the price cap, the value of self-consumption drops. The smart money hedges: buy the panels, but do not count on 2024’s high prices lasting forever.
