The price tag tells you two things. First, building a home that generates all its own energy is expensive. Second, the market is starting to value that capability. Off-grid living works best for new builds in rural areas where grid connection costs are high, sometimes £20,000–£50,000 to run a cable. For an existing home, the economics are different. Retrofitting a 1930s semi to net-zero standard costs around £35,000–£60,000, according to the UK Green Building Council. That includes insulation, heat pump, solar panels and battery. That is a target worth measuring against your own EPC and energy use.
