SAP
Standard Assessment Procedure. The government methodology used to calculate a home energy rating. Considers insulation, heating, ventilation, and lighting.
Smart meter
A digital meter that sends real-time usage data to your energy supplier. Eliminates estimated bills and helps you monitor consumption patterns.
Standing charge
A fixed daily fee charged by energy suppliers regardless of how much energy you use. Typically around 30p per day for electricity and 30p for gas.
Draught proofing
Sealing gaps around windows, doors, floors, and other openings to prevent cold air entering and warm air escaping. One of the cheapest energy improvements.
kWh
Kilowatt hour. The standard unit of energy used on bills. One kWh is the energy used by a 1,000-watt appliance running for one hour.
