NHS cuts energy bills by £10k with solar panels

Leighton Hospital in Crewe will cut its electricity bills by nearly £10,000 a year with a new rooftop solar installation. The 200-panel array, generating roughly 70,000 kWh annually, will cover a significant chunk of the hospital’s daytime power demand.

As reported by the Chester Standard, the project was funded by the NHS Trust’s own capital budget and installed by a local contractor. The savings are locked in for the 25-year lifespan of the panels.

What it means for your home

The catch: timing and grants

Yet the hospital’s project was funded upfront, most households cannot write a £6,000 cheque. The government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme does not cover solar, only heat pumps and biomass. However, the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) pays households for surplus electricity exported to the grid, typically 5–15p per kWh. Ofgem data shows the average SEG rate is around 12p, adding £100–£200 a year to savings.

What this misses: the VAT cut on solar installations from 20% to 0%, introduced in April 2022, remains in place until 2027. That saves £1,000–£1,600 on a typical system. And with panel prices falling, wholesale costs dropped 40% in 2023, the upfront barrier is lower than ever.

Who should act now

Households with a south- or east-west-facing roof, no shading, and a daytime electricity load (working from home, electric car charging, or heat pump use) should prioritise solar. The hospital’s example shows the logic scales down. Check your EPC first, if you’re below a C, solar is likely the cheapest single upgrade to improve it.

Apply through the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) for certified installers. The Energy Saving Trust’s online tool gives a personalised payback estimate. By 2026, the government expects 70% of new homes to include solar as standard, but existing homes can act now.
