The average UK household spends £1,800 a year on electricity, and nearly half of that goes on peak-time rates between 4pm and 7pm. Nissan’s latest vehicle-to-grid trial, announced this week, could flip that equation entirely.

Who qualifies, and who doesn’t
The trial is open to Nissan Leaf and Ariya owners with off-street parking and a compatible home charger. Participants must sign up to a smart tariff from Octopus Energy or OVO that pays for exported power at rates of 15p–25p per kWh, depending on the time of day. Ofgem’s latest data shows the average price cap rate for electricity is 24.5p per kWh, so the export rate is competitive, but only for households that can shift their charging to the cheapest overnight slots (typically 12am–5am, at 7.5p–10p per kWh).
The catch is upfront cost. A bi-directional charger from Nissan or a certified partner costs between £5,000 and £8,000 installed, though the government’s Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant covers up to £350 for homeowners with off-street parking. The grant is means-tested, however, and only available to those in flats or rental properties. Owner-occupiers in houses must pay the full whack.
What it costs a typical 3-bed semi
Take a typical 3-bed semi in Milton Keynes with a Nissan Leaf 40 kWh battery. The household uses 3,500 kWh of electricity a year, half of which is currently consumed at peak rates. Under the trial, the family charges the Leaf overnight at 8p per kWh, then exports 10 kWh each weekday evening at 20p per kWh. Annual savings: £240 on the electricity bill, plus a £120 reduction in standing charges from the smart tariff. Total: £360 a year.
But that assumes the car is parked at home during peak hours, not commuting or parked at a supermarket. The Energy Saving Trust warns that real-world savings can be 20–30% lower if the vehicle is used for long journeys or if the household has multiple EVs. Still, for the 60% of UK households with off-street parking and a single EV, the numbers stack up.
EPC impact, and the bigger picture
Installing a V2G charger doesn’t directly improve an EPC rating, the assessor doesn’t count car batteries. But it can reduce the home’s grid electricity consumption by up to 30% during peak periods, which lowers the carbon intensity of the property. The government’s Future Homes Standard, due in 2025, will require new builds to have a maximum space heating demand of 30 kWh/m²/year. V2G systems, combined with solar panels and battery storage, could help existing homes meet that threshold.
Nissan’s trial is one of several V2G projects in the UK. Octopus Energy’s Powerloop trial, which ran from 2020 to 2023, showed average savings of £250 per year across 300 households. The difference with Nissan’s scheme is scale, 1,000 homes means the grid operator, National Grid ESO, can test real-time balancing at a level that matters.
The catch is that V2G remains niche. Only about 15% of UK EV owners have a smart charger capable of exporting power, according to Zapmap data. And the chargers themselves are expensive. But as battery costs fall, BloombergNEF expects pack prices to drop below £80/kWh by 2026, the economics improve.
