Ofgem storage plan could cut household bills by £1bn

The UK’s electricity grid is about to get a very large battery. Ofgem has approved a framework to massively expand energy storage capacity, enough to save households an estimated £1bn a year by 2030, as reported by the IET. Why storage cuts your bill

Britain’s electricity system has a simple problem: wind and solar generate when the weather dictates, not when people need power. At night, wind farms are sometimes paid to switch off because there’s nowhere to store the power. During winter evenings, gas plants fire up at huge cost, and you pay the difference. Ofgem’s new storage regime removes the regulatory barriers that have slowed battery deployment. The Energy Systems Catapult estimates that 30 GW of storage by 2030, up from 4 GW today, could reduce wholesale electricity costs by £1bn a year. What it means for solar and heat pump owners

The catch is timing: the storage build-out takes years, and network charges won’t fall overnight. Ofgem’s own impact assessment suggests meaningful bill reductions from 2027 onwards.

Who qualifies, and who doesn’t

This is not a direct grant or subsidy for households. The benefit comes indirectly through lower wholesale prices. But homeowners with time-of-use tariffs, like Octopus Flux or OVO’s Heat Pump Plus, will feel the effect first, because they can charge batteries when power is cheap and discharge when prices spike. The typical 3-bed semi with a 5 kW solar array and a 10 kWh home battery could save an extra £150–£200 a year once grid storage reaches scale, according to modelling by the Energy Saving Trust. Those without batteries or smart tariffs will see smaller savings, perhaps £30–£50 annually.

Ofgem’s announcement is a structural shift, not a short-term fix. No household needs to rush. But if you are planning a solar or battery install, choose a supplier that offers time-of-use tariffs, they will become more valuable as storage expands.
