The government has announced that more families will benefit from lower bills through plug-in solar panels. That is a welcome headline for the 15 million UK households still on standard variable tariffs. But the small print matters more than the press release.

For homeowners serious about cutting bills and improving EPC ratings, a full rooftop solar array (3–4 kW) costs £5,000–£7,000 but saves £300–£500 a year and adds up to 10 EPC points. Plug-in panels are a sensible first step for renters or those in flats, but they are not a substitute for a proper system.

Households considering plug-in panels should check their electricity usage pattern first. If you are out all day, the savings shrink. If you work from home, they grow. The best move?
