Plug-in solar panels are coming to UK homes this year

Ofgem will publish draft technical standards for plug-in solar panels by March 2025, the first time the regulator has formally addressed this loophole-closing technology. The move follows years of consumer frustration with the cost and complexity of traditional rooftop solar installations.

As reported by BusinessGreen, the government is now actively advancing plans to bring these devices to the UK market. The consultation closes on 14 February 2025, with final rules expected by summer.

Who qualifies, and who doesn’t

Plug-in solar panels are designed for renters, flat-dwellers, and homeowners who cannot, or do not want to, install permanent roof-mounted arrays. The typical product is a 300–400W panel that plugs into a standard 13-amp socket via a microinverter. No scaffolding, no roof work, no electrician.

But there is a catch. Current UK wiring regulations (BS 7671) technically prohibit the connection of generation equipment through a domestic socket without an approved grid-tie inverter. The government’s proposed standards will set clear safety requirements for the inverter, cable rating, and earth fault protection. Until those standards are in force, retailers selling these devices risk enforcement action from trading standards.

What it costs a typical 3-bed semi

A single 350W plug-in panel costs between £500 and £1,000, depending on the brand and inverter quality. Installed cost is zero if you do it yourself, but you must ensure the socket circuit can handle the backfeed. A typical 3-bed semi with south-facing windows could generate around 250 kWh per year from one panel. At the current price cap of 24.5p per kWh, that saves roughly £61 a year. If you use more electricity during daylight hours, working from home, running appliances, the saving could reach £120.

For comparison, a full 4 kW rooftop array costs £5,000–£8,000 installed and saves £500–£800 a year. The plug-in panel pays back in 8–16 years; the rooftop system in 8–12 years. The plug-in option wins on upfront cost and flexibility, but loses on total lifetime savings.

The EPC and resale value question

Plug-in panels do not currently count toward an EPC rating because EPC assessors require permanently fixed installations. The government has not yet indicated whether this will change. For homeowners planning to sell or remortgage within five years, a plug-in panel adds no EPC points. Renters, however, can take the panel with them when they move, a significant advantage over fixed solar.

Energy Saving Trust notes that even a small plug-in panel can reduce a household’s grid demand by 10–15% during summer months. That matters when the price cap is forecast to rise again in October 2025.

What to do next

If you are interested in plug-in solar, do not buy anything until the government publishes its final standards. Products sold before that date may not comply and could invalidate your home insurance. Instead, register your interest with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s consultation portal. The feedback window closes on 14 February 2025. After that, expect approved products to appear on the Energy Saving Trust’s recommended list by autumn 2025.
