Plug-in solar panels get government backing

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero this week opened consultations on plug-in solar panels, the DIY kits that let homeowners connect panels directly to a socket. The move, backed by major retailers including B&Q and Currys, could put solar generation within reach of 10 million UK households without a roof survey or professional installer.

As reported by Solar Power Portal, the consultations will examine safety standards, grid connection protocols, and whether plug-in panels qualify for the Smart Export Guarantee. The key question for homeowners: will these cheap kits actually cut bills, or just add risk?

Who qualifies, and who doesn’t

Plug-in solar kits typically cost £400 to £800 for a 300W to 500W panel, compared with £5,000 to £8,000 for a full 4kW rooftop system. The catch is output: a single plug-in panel generates roughly 250–400 kWh per year in the UK, depending on orientation and sunlight. That’s about 10% of a typical 3-bed semi’s annual electricity consumption of 2,900 kWh.

Energy Saving Trust estimates a well-placed 350W panel could save £50 to £80 a year at current price cap rates. But households on time-of-use tariffs, like Octopus Agile, could shift washing and charging to sunny hours and save up to £200. The government’s consultation will test whether these estimates hold under real-world conditions.

Not everyone can plug in. Flats above the ground floor, homes with north-facing gardens, or properties shaded by trees will see minimal returns. Renters also face landlord permission hurdles; the consultation does not address tenancy rights.

What it costs a typical 3-bed semi

Installing a single plug-in panel costs £500 on average, including the microinverter and cable. Payback period ranges from 6 to 10 years at current electricity prices, faster if you use half the generation during peak rate hours. But the kit must be fitted to a dedicated circuit by a qualified electrician to comply with Part P of the Building Regulations, adding £150 to £250 to the bill.

Ofgem has not yet confirmed whether plug-in panels qualify for the Smart Export Guarantee, which pays 5–15p per kWh exported. Without SEG accreditation, any surplus power fed to the grid goes unpaid, and could even trigger a penalty if the installation trips local safety systems. The consultation will clarify this by March 2025.

EPC impact is minimal. A single 350W panel adds roughly 0.5 points to a property’s Energy Efficiency Rating, not enough to lift a D to a C. But a cluster of three panels could add 1.5 points, which may nudge borderline homes into a higher band. Landlords targeting EPC C by 2028 should treat plug-in solar as a supplement, not a solution.

The catch, and what the consultation misses

Retailer support is welcome, but the consultation does not address the biggest risk: unsoldered connections. Plug-in panels use standard 13-amp plugs, which can overheat if the socket is already powering a high-draw appliance. A 2023 Electrical Safety First report found that 12% of DIY solar installations had loose connections that could cause arcing.

DESNZ has proposed a mandatory certification scheme for plug-in kits, similar to the Microgeneration Certification Scheme for full systems. But the consultation document leaves enforcement to retailers, not Trading Standards. Critics argue this creates a race to the bottom on price, not safety.

Yet the potential is real. If 500,000 UK households install a single plug-in panel, the combined capacity would equal a large gas power station, without the planning delays. The consultation’s outcome will determine whether that potential is realised safely or squandered by cowboy kits.

Households considering plug-in solar should wait until the consultation concludes, expected by April 2025, and the government publishes approved product standards. Buying now could leave you with a kit that fails SEG certification or violates Building Regulations.

For those who cannot wait: choose a kit with a Type B microinverter (for grid isolation) and hire an MCS-certified electrician to install the dedicated circuit. The £200 extra is insurance against a £1,000 fire repair.

Check eligibility for the Smart Export Guarantee on Ofgem’s website from May 2025. And remember: a plug-in panel is a supplement, not a replacement. The cheapest kWh is still the one you don’t use, so insulate first, solar later.
