More than 1.2 gigawatts of new solar capacity were connected to UK homes and businesses in 2024, a record that beats the previous high from 2015 by nearly a third. That is roughly the output of a nuclear reactor, spread across hundreds of thousands of rooftops.

Who qualifies, and who doesn’t

Almost any home with a south-facing, east-west, or flat roof can host panels. The rule of thumb: you need at least 15 m² of unshaded roof space for a 4 kW system, the size that covers a typical 3-bed semi’s daytime electricity use. If you have a north-facing roof or heavy tree cover, a ground-mounted array in the garden might still work, though planning permission is required.

Renters and flat owners face a harder path. Landlords must consent to roof alterations, and leases often restrict external changes. The government’s 0% VAT on solar installations (extended to March 2027) applies to all installations, but the upfront cost, typically £5,000–£7,000 for a 4 kW system, still deters many. The Energy Saving Trust estimates that a third of UK homes are unsuitable for rooftop solar, mainly due to orientation or shading.
