Why the grid keeps paying wind farms to stop

Britain’s wind fleet can generate over 30 GW. The grid can only transmit about 25 GW from Scotland and the North Sea to where people actually live – the South East, London, the Midlands. When wind blows hard, National Grid Electricity System Operator must order turbines to curtail. The compensation is guaranteed in their contracts. In 2023, that bill hit £1bn.

Ofgem figures show constraint payments have tripled since 2020. The £300 figure assumes a typical dual-fuel household using 12,000 kWh gas and 2,900 kWh electricity. Not all of that is wind – but wind is the fastest-growing generator, so its share of the constraint cost is rising.

The £300 is not a line item on your bill. It is embedded in wholesale electricity costs, which suppliers then pass on. The Energy Saving Trust estimates that a typical 3-bed semi can cut electricity use by 25% with loft insulation (270 mm), cavity wall fill, and draught-proofing. That saves around £180 a year on the electricity portion alone – offsetting more than half the wind waste.

EPC ratings are driven by fabric efficiency first. A home moving from EPC D to C typically saves 2,000–3,000 kWh per year. That is roughly £240–£360 at current price cap rates. Insulation pays back faster than solar in most UK homes – and it works even when the grid wastes wind.

What the Government and Ofgem are (not) doing

The Government approved the Great Grid Upgrade in 2023 – a £54bn plan to reinforce transmission lines, particularly from Scotland to England. The first new cables won’t be operational until 2029. Ofgem is consulting on a ‘constraint cost cap’ for renewables, but has not set a date.

The catch is that every year of delay adds another £1bn to bills. The Climate Change Committee warned in March that grid bottlenecks are the single biggest barrier to net zero electricity by 2035. For homeowners, that means the £300 figure could rise to £400 before it falls.

What you can do now

You cannot fix the grid. But you can fix your demand. Smart tariffs like Octopus Agile or OVO’s Time of Use let you shift washing, EV charging, and heating to when wind is plentiful – often free or negative price periods. A typical household with an EV saves £200–£400 a year on such tariffs, according to Octopus data.

Insulation grants remain available through the Great British Insulation Scheme for households on certain benefits. For others, a loft insulation top-up to 270 mm costs around £300–£500 and pays back in two to three years. That is a direct hedge against grid waste.

Households planning a heat pump should check if their local DNO (distribution network operator) can handle the extra load. Some rural areas still have single-phase connections – upgrading to three-phase costs £1,000–£3,000 and is not always covered by the BUS grant.
