What hydrogen heating means for a typical 3-bed semi

Hydrogen boilers do not yet exist on the UK market. Trials in Gateshead and Whitby are blending up to 20% hydrogen into the natural gas grid, but pure hydrogen boilers remain in prototype stages. The government’s Hydrogen Heating Village trial, originally planned for 2025, was cancelled in July 2023 after local opposition and cost concerns. Ofgem has not set a date for a national hydrogen heating rollout.

The cost gap is stark. A heat pump installation typically costs £7,000 to £13,000 after the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. A hydrogen boiler, if it ever reaches market, would likely cost more than a gas boiler (£1,500–£3,000) and require a new hydrogen pipe to the house, estimated by the Energy Networks Association at £1,000–£3,000 per property. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has not published a per-household cost estimate for hydrogen conversion, but independent modelling by the Carbon Trust suggests it would be higher than heat pumps or district heating in most scenarios.

EPC impact, hydrogen versus heat pumps

An Energy Performance Certificate rates homes A to G based on heating efficiency and carbon emissions. A hydrogen boiler would score well on carbon if the hydrogen is produced with renewable electricity (green hydrogen), but poorly on efficiency, hydrogen boilers waste more heat than heat pumps. Current EPC methodology does not include a specific category for hydrogen heating, so it is unclear how it would affect a rating. The government’s Heat and Buildings Strategy, published in 2021, says hydrogen will play a role only in “hard-to-decarbonise” buildings, not the majority of homes.

For the 29 million UK homes connected to the gas grid, the practical question is: should you wait for hydrogen or install a heat pump now? The answer, based on current policy, is that hydrogen is at least 10 years away for most homes. The Climate Change Committee’s 2023 Progress Report to Parliament states that “hydrogen for heating should not be assumed to be available at scale before 2035.”

The catch, hydrogen supply and cost

But the certification of a single ship does not solve the two biggest barriers to household hydrogen: cost and supply. Green hydrogen currently costs roughly £5–£8 per kilogram, compared to natural gas at roughly £0.04 per kWh (equivalent to about £0.40 per kg of hydrogen energy). Even with carbon taxes, hydrogen is unlikely to be cheaper than gas before 2035. The UK has only one operational green hydrogen plant, in Aberdeen, and DESNZ’s Hydrogen Strategy targets 10 GW of production by 2030, but most of that is for industry, not homes.

The ship certification is a useful proof of safety and regulation. But for a homeowner in a 1970s semi in Manchester, it changes nothing about the choice between a heat pump and a gas boiler this year. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £7,500 towards a heat pump until 2027. Hydrogen boilers are not eligible for any grant. The Energy Saving Trust advises that insulation and a heat pump remain the most cost-effective low-carbon heating option for most homes today.

Households considering low-carbon heating should not delay on the basis of hydrogen’s future promise. Check your EPC rating, if it is below C, improve insulation first. If you need a boiler replacement now, consider a heat pump with the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. If you must stay on gas, choose an A-rated condensing boiler and plan for a future switch. Hydrogen may arrive, but it will not be cheap, fast, or universal. The ship certification is a step, not a destination.
