What a plug-in panel actually delivers

Under current UK wiring regulations (BS 7671), any device that feeds power into a household circuit must be limited to 16 amps per socket, that is roughly 3,680W. But plug-in solar kits sold today are typically capped at 680W by their internal inverter. At that size, a single panel running for four hours of decent winter sun might produce 2.7 kWh. On a typical 3-bed semi using 8–10 kWh a day, that shaves perhaps 30% off the daytime draw. A plug-in panel is legally a portable appliance. Domestic Energy Assessors are trained to ignore it. So a house with four plug-in panels on the balcony scores exactly the same EPC as one with none. If you are planning to sell in the next five years, the £100 annual saving will not offset the £0 uplift in your rating. The same logic applies to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS): plug-in panels are not eligible for the £7,500 grant because the BUS requires a fixed installation with MCS certification.

For a tenant in a top-floor flat with a south-facing balcony and no ability to alter the fabric of the building, a £650 plug-in kit makes genuine sense. It cuts the electricity bill by a visible amount, requires no permission, and can be taken when they move. For a homeowner with a pitched roof and a spare £6,000, a full 4 kW array with MCS certification and a battery remains the better bet: it saves £600–£800 a year, boosts the EPC by 10–15 points, and pays for itself in 8–10 years. The plug-in revolution is real, but it is a niche product for a specific problem, not the mass-market solution the headlines suggest. Households should check their roof orientation, their typical daytime usage, and whether their supplier offers any export payment before buying. The panels may be plug-and-play, but the decision is not.
