The average UK home uses 2,900 kWh of electricity per year, yet our rooftops receive enough sunlight to generate roughly half that amount. The question is no longer whether solar works in Britain, it’s whether you can afford not to install it.

Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries now dominate the market, offering 6,000-10,000 cycles versus 3,000-5,000 for older chemistries. That means a modern battery should last 15-20 years, matching the lifespan of the panels themselves. Installers report that 70% of new solar customers now choose a battery at the point of installation.

Households on standard variable tariffs can compare SEG rates via Ofgem’s website. The best rates come from Octopus Energy (15p/kWh) and EDF (12p/kWh), but check the small print, some require you to be on their smart tariff. Applications for solar installation typically take 4-8 weeks from survey to completion. The sooner you start, the sooner you stop paying the grid.
