The 50 kWp array, funded by the Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Trust, covers part of the hospital’s daytime electricity load. For the trust, it is a 15-year payback on a £150,000 investment. As reported by Nantwich News, the hospital’s panels will generate roughly 45,000 kWh per year. That is about four times the annual consumption of a typical three-bed semi. The trust will use the power on-site, avoiding grid purchases at commercial rates of 15–18p per kWh.

What it costs a typical 3-bed semi

A 3.5 kWp solar system, the most common size for UK homes, costs between £5,000 and £7,000 installed, according to Energy Saving Trust data. With 0% VAT on installations since April 2022, the net cost is lower than it was three years ago. A household using 3,500 kWh of electricity a year can expect to save £200–£500 annually, depending on how much power is used during daylight hours.
