uPVC Fascias, Soffits and Guttering Guide

Choosing the wrong roofline materials is a bit like putting a new roof on a rotting frame. The visible result looks perfectly fine for a year or two, then the hidden damage compounds quietly until you’re facing a bill that’s five times what it would have cost to get things right the first time. I’ve […]

How to Check If Your Home Already Has Cavity Wall Insulation

Roughly a third of the heat lost from an uninsulated UK home escapes through the walls. For properties with cavity walls, the most common wall construction found across mid-twentieth-century Britain, filling that gap with insulation is one of the single most impactful improvements a homeowner can make. Yet before any installer turns up with drilling […]

Internal Wall Insulation Pros and Cons for Period Properties

Millions of UK homes built before 1919 are haemorrhaging heat through their solid brick and stone walls every single day, adding hundreds of pounds to energy bills year after year. For owners of period properties, this heat loss is especially frustrating because the very design of their homes, built long before modern insulation was even […]

Underfloor Insulation Options for Suspended Timber Floors

Suspended timber floors are one of the most commonly overlooked sources of heat loss in older British homes, yet they are also one of the most straightforward to address. Millions of UK properties, particularly those built before 1930, including Victorian and Edwardian terraces, semi-detached houses, and end-of-terrace cottages, sit on suspended timber floors that were […]

Insulate a solid wall house internally (2026)

Solid walls are one of the least forgiving features of an older UK home for energy efficiency. Unlike modern cavity walls, which trap a layer of still air between two leaves of brick, a solid wall is exactly that, a single, unbroken thickness of brick or stone, typically 225mm thick, with no gap and no […]

Home Insulation Glossary

R-value
Thermal resistance. A measure of how well insulation resists heat flow. Higher R-values mean better insulation. Measured in m2K/W.
U-value
The rate of heat transfer through a building element. Lower is better. Uninsulated cavity walls have a U-value of about 1.5, insulated walls around 0.5.
Cavity wall
A wall built with two layers (leaves) with a gap between them. This gap can be filled with insulation to reduce heat loss by up to 35 percent.
EWI
External Wall Insulation. Insulation boards fixed to the outside of a building and covered with render. Suitable for solid-walled properties.
Thermal bridge
A point in the building fabric where heat transfers more easily, such as around window frames or at wall-floor junctions. Also called a cold bridge.
Vapour barrier
A membrane that prevents moisture from passing through insulated walls or roofs. Essential to prevent condensation and damp within the insulation layer.
