What the record means for your energy bill

At current price cap rates of 24.5p per kWh, that translates to savings of around £400–£600 a year on bills, depending on how much energy you use when the sun shines.

But the headline savings understate the real benefit. The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) pays households for surplus electricity exported to the grid. Rates vary by supplier, Octopus Energy offers 15p per kWh, while others pay as little as 4p. A household that exports half its generation could earn an extra £100–£150 a year. But unlike heat pumps, solar panels receive no upfront grant under current government programmes. The Labour government has promised a ‘Local Power Plan’ with community solar projects, but details on household-level support remain vague.

What this misses is the missed opportunity for renters. As of 2024, only 1% of rented homes have solar panels, compared to 10% of owner-occupied homes.
