The stunt is built to prove that photovoltaic cells can power more than just a kettle. But for the 18 million UK homes still running on gas boilers and grid electricity, the question is less about endurance records and more about what a solar array actually delivers on a rainy Tuesday in November.

As reported by the BBC, the vehicle uses roof-mounted solar panels to charge its battery while driving, a neat engineering trick, but a world away from the static panels on your roof. The average UK home consumes about 2,700 kWh of electricity a year. A typical 4 kW solar system in Manchester generates roughly 3,400 kWh annually. In Cornwall, the same system pushes 4,200 kWh. Without a battery, you export cheap power at noon and buy expensive power at 6pm. The maths works, but only if you size the system for the darkest day, not the sunniest.
