Radiator oversize factor explained for low flow temperatures

MCS 021, the Heat Emitter Guide that UK heat pump installers size radiators from, tells them to multiply each room’s heat loss by 3.1 before choosing a radiator for a system designed to run at 41-45°C. At 51-55°C that multiplier drops to 1.90. Those two numbers decide whether your existing radiators stay on the wall […]

Heating controls ranked by what they actually save

The University of Salford‘s Energy House put a gas combi boiler in an environmental chamber and measured what different heating controls actually saved. The best-performing thermostat cut heating gas by 15% in a winter test. The change that costs nothing, turning the boiler’s flow temperature down to 60°C, cuts about 9% of a household’s total […]

Best smart heating controls for UK homes

How smart heating controls differ from a standard thermostat A standard thermostat is a simple on/off switch. It turns the boiler on when the room temperature drops below your set point and off when it rises above. It does not learn your schedule, adjust to weather, or control individual rooms. Smart heating controls add three […]

Radiator sizing when switching to a heat pump

Switching from a gas boiler to a heat pump often requires radiators that are 2.5 to 3 times larger in heat output to work efficiently at lower flow temperatures. If you are planning to replace a gas boiler with an air source heat pump, you may be wondering whether your existing radiators will be adequate. […]

Will a heat pump work in an older UK home?

Heat pumps work in older UK homes, the key is insulation, not the age of the house If you own a Victorian terrace or a 1930s semi, you may have heard that heat pumps only suit modern, well-insulated homes. That is not correct. A heat pump can work in any home built before 1990, provided […]

Does a magnetic filter really protect a boiler?

A magnetic filter costs roughly £150–£300 installed and is recommended by most boiler manufacturers A magnetic filter is a device plumbed into your central heating pipework that captures magnetite, a black iron-oxide sludge that forms as steel radiators and pipes corrode. By trapping these particles before they reach the boiler’s heat exchanger, the filter prevents […]

Boilers & Heating Glossary

COP
Coefficient of Performance. The ratio of heat output to electrical input. A COP of 3 means for every 1 kWh of electricity used, 3 kWh of heat is produced.
SCOP
Seasonal Coefficient of Performance. The average COP over an entire heating season, accounting for varying outdoor temperatures.
ASHP
Air Source Heat Pump. Extracts heat from outdoor air to heat your home and hot water. Works efficiently down to minus 15 degrees Celsius.
GSHP
Ground Source Heat Pump. Extracts heat from underground via buried pipes. More efficient than ASHPs but significantly more expensive to install.
BUS Grant
Boiler Upgrade Scheme. A government grant of 7,500 pounds towards the cost of installing a heat pump, available until 2028.
Flow temperature
The temperature of water leaving the boiler or heat pump. Heat pumps work best at lower flow temperatures (35-45C) compared to boilers (60-70C).
